Week 6 - Jumping Frog
Other skills or activities in my life that I apply Dweck's incremental theory would include most schoolwork, basketball, and building relationships with others. These are skills that I have worked at most of my life and that have been much more valuable to me. For example, when I first meet someone, I believe that over time that the relationship can grow and that it can become better and better with more effort put into it.
My occupational choices have been affected to a considerable degree with Dweck's theories. However, I have still tried to avoid having an entity theory with most domains of my life. When I first took a chemistry course, I initially felt that it was nearly impossible to improve at learning the difficult math procedures involved. This experience was one of several reasons I decided to choose the career path that I did.
At the start of my new occupation of origami, I started to adopt more of an entity theory because I felt that I may not be able to improve in certain aspects of it, such as using small and precise hand skills to make tiny folds. However, after the initial challenges, I can confidently say that I have adjusted to more of an incremental theory mindset. I believe that with more practice that I can continue to get better. I can feel confident in saying that because this week felt like the best and most enjoyable origami project so far!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteWe should play basketball sometime! I always love seeing your masterpieces... they are so, so cool to see. When you do these projects, do you experience flow? I feel that whenever I do oragami, I experience way more stress than what is sincerely needed (I swear little kids are better at it than me). In regards to Dweck's self-theories, do you believe if you were to take chemistry again, you could shift your mindset rather quickly... or do you believe that it would take time to adjust to a incremental theory approach?
Keep up the good work, Matt! May your yin and yang be aligned.

Bryan,
DeleteDefinitely appreciate your comment. That was great. I think I can experience flow doing origami when I have something that guides me well. It's hard to find a flow when I can't understand how to finish an origami project. If I were to take chemistry again, I believe that I could slowly develop an incremental theory, but I would guess that I would need more time to accomplish that then would be possible in just one semester.
