Week 5 - Fox



This week I felt that I made progress with my skill in Origami! I felt considerably more comfortable following all of the instructions. I also noticed that it makes things feel much easier if I try to follow exactly what the instructions are telling me or what a video is showing. I pause even after a short time so that I don't get too far behind. This week I worked on a fox! It still didn't turn out perfect, but I think that it still turned out well enough!

After reexamining flow, I feel that I have been able to experience it and recognize afterwards that I spent time in it. However, I still haven't truly experienced this kind of flow with origami yet. Perhaps this is because I still am not as familiar with doing it. An activity that has brought it recently though is actually when I upgraded my new computer. When I was taking it apart to install a new part, it felt easy for me to focus. I believe that doing that kind of thing is an enjoyable new hobby for me as well.

I would say that origami has the potential to provide me with flow experience in the future. I could already tell today that it was getting easier for me. Towards the beginning during the basic folds, I almost felt like I could get into a flow. However, when the project got more difficult I had to push myself to finish it. In order to make it easier to find flow with origami, I believe that more experience is needed on my part and perhaps designs that fit my level of skill more appropriately. 

I agree that my personality has aspects that are autotelic. I enjoy taking time for myself and trying to experience things just for the experience of doing them, especially for hobbies or leisure. However, I do not feel that I am autotelic in the sense that I always like trying new things just for the experience. I usually stick to what I enjoy, so I think there is that difference for me. My personality may attract flow through doing things that I have experience with and that I know really enjoy doing because I usually like to keep doing what I know I like.

    Hello Matthew! Your fox is awesome- I think origami looks so difficult but its neat you can do cool things with one piece of paper! I think its awesome that you can pause to catch up, I'm guessing you already know this, but if you ever watch a YouTube tutorial, you can click settings and slow down the video speed as well which always helps me! Do you feel like you would be able to create your own origami patterns? Your thoughts on autotelic personalities was insightful and I was also curious if you find yourself resisting trying new things, or if the opportunity just doesn't arise very often? Great work! I really enjoy seeing your projects- I feel like come Christmastime they would be neat tree ornaments!

      Karin, thank you so much for taking the time to write your comment. I think that's a fun idea to try out my own patterns! Maybe towards the end of the semester I can try that. I also think that I perhaps tend to shy away from trying new things, but I think that it can really depend on what it is.

Week 1 Origami Project

For my first project, I wanted to attempt something that origami guides call “simple.” I found a project with that label, but it was still more complicated than expected. This proved to me that perhaps I have a lot to learn about what really goes in to making an appealing piece of origami. I found myself stopping and repeating most of the steps involved. I stressed to make my folds in the same exact places and with the same sharpness. You can see a picture of the folding in progress before the finished project. Week 9 - Whale

I had a whaley good time this week with origami!😏 I wanted to try a design that can stand on its own. I felt like this week, especially compared to the first two weeks, origami has gotten considerably easier and more enjoyable. I still probably couldn't invent a new design by myself on-demand, but it feels less stressful to follow the precise and intricate folds. Something that origami has taught me, as well as other difficult challenges in life, is that much of how learning how to do something new is learning how to learn it.  Something that came to mind during the "Flowers on the Wall" song was that perhaps meaningful occupations can be very different for different people. They suggested through the song that perhaps their everyday occupations seemed boring to onlookers. However, their chorus sang "I'm having lots of fun countin' flowers on the wall, that don't bother me at all." They sounded completely content with the simple things in life that ...

Origami Week 2 - Butterfly

This week, I attempted a butterfly for my second project of origami. I still tried to accomplish something that was around the beginner level, but I still felt that I struggled to do it exactly right. Emotionally, I started to feel a bit frustrated at myself for how many times I needed to stop or rewind a tutorial video. However, I also felt after a little while that perhaps I just needed to have a bit more patience with myself because this is still a new occupation for me! This occupation seems to relate to a couple of definitions of occupations in the reading, but not to all of them. The issue that keeps it from relating to each definition of occupation is that it is not something I perform every single day. However, it is still something that is "self-initiated, self-directed, and purposeful." In addition, it is something that I do to occupy myself.
