Week 8 - Crane

Image
This week, I had a new approach to learning a new origami design by being taught in person! My wife actually knew this design and she wanted to show me how to make it for this week. Having someone there in person who I could ask questions to made it significantly easier to make. I appreciated how much less stressful it felt to be exact because I didn't have to squint and stare at a screen to find the precise folding points.  Social support has been a resource that very positively affected my new occupation this week. The encouragement and participation from my wife made it easy to start and follow through with. It also helped me to attempt a new design that I may have felt is a bit too daunting at first. A resource mentioned in the Cantor and Sanderson (1999) reading that has felt not very relevant has been power and status. I feel unsure how I would apply that principle with my experience so far with origami.  A past principle that we have learned about that I reflect o...

Week 7 - Halloween Bat

My new occupation feels like it is going much better recently! This week, I felt a noticeable difference in my skill level compared to when I started. Even though most origami shapes start out the same, I am impressed that something new can come from it every time. I am getting a feel for how to follow the guides that I use better and how to make precise folds. Factors that have played a role in choosing my new occupation included something that felt like they could stretch my skills yet still be realistic. I also wanted to find something that seemed conducive to the course to write about and with tracking my progress reasonably well. The guides that I have found to teach me how to do different shapes have been a large factor in how I go about implementing my new origami skills. Video guides have specifically been the most helpful when they go at a certain pace.  Regarding my new occupation in origami, my reflection off of the self-perception mirror has improved over time. At first...

Week 6 - Jumping Frog

Some  skills, domains, activities, etc. in your life that I tend to apply Dweck's entity theory include learning chemistry, painting, drawing, and volleyball. These are all things in the past that I have tried that I have either had great difficulty and/or little interest in. These barriers have influenced me to feel that I have less capacity to improve in those areas. However, I understand more now that with more effort I could probably improve with enough diligence.       Other skills or activities in my life that I apply Dweck's incremental theory would include most schoolwork, basketball, and building relationships with others. These are skills that I have worked at most of my life and that have been much more valuable to me. For example, when I first meet someone, I believe that over time that the relationship can grow and that it can become better and better with more effort put into it.           My occup...

Week 5 - Fox

Image
This week I felt that I made progress with my skill in Origami! I felt considerably more comfortable following all of the instructions. I also noticed that it makes things feel much easier if I try to follow exactly what the instructions are telling me or what a video is showing. I pause even after a short time so that I don't get too far behind. This week I worked on a fox! It still didn't turn out perfect, but I think that it still turned out well enough! After reexamining flow, I feel that I have been able to experience it and recognize afterwards that I spent time in it. However, I still haven't truly experienced this kind of flow with origami yet. Perhaps this is because I still am not as familiar with doing it. An activity that has brought it recently though is actually when I upgraded my new computer. When I was taking it apart to install a new part, it felt easy for me to focus. I believe that doing that kind of thing is an enjoyable new hobby for me as well. I woul...
